Information resources

Databases

Index and Abstract services
These databases DON’T give you the full text of journal articles or reports. However, they do allow you to perform searches across a large number of academic journals, reports and conference proceedings. I&A databases are not restricted to material published by certain companies, or (unless stated otherwise) by geographical region or language.

You can link directly to the full text of articles from an I&A database if the library has a subscription to that title. Click on the SFX button to check if the full text is available.

Two I&A databases to try are:
ProQuest
Web of Knowledge (WoK) (contains Web of Science)

Tutorials for both of these are available on the library website

E-journals databases
These databases are usually owned by a publishing company (e.g. Wiley), or a learned society (e.g. Royal Society of Chemistry). Depending on the type of subscription the library has we may have full text access to all the journals in the database, or to just a selection. Therefore you have a greater chance of finding full text articles in an e-journals database (useful if deadlines are looming), but you are restricting your search to a smaller number of titles.

Three e-journal databases to try are:
ScienceDirect (Elsevier)
SpringerLink
Taylor & Francis

Other databases

For law try Justis.com
For economics and business try EBSCO (Business Source Complete)
For newspapers and current events try Factiva

The Internet

Search engines
Google has an advanced search which allows you to customise and limit your search.

Google Scholar is good for finding reports and conference material. It also has an advanced search.

Scirus is a science-related search engine run by Elsevier.

A list of more search engines can be found on Wikipedia.

Useful websites
The library has a delicious account listing of useful websites, reports etc for Environmental Technology. It can be found here.
