New artwork in the Central Library

by Debbie

We are fortunate to have an artwork, by Mark Tovell, depicting the Higgs Boson, on display in the Central Library as part of its tour of scientific institutions around the world.

Politics, Solid State and the Higgs, shows a computer image of what the artist imagines the Higgs Boson to look like. The Higgs Boson is a theorised particle which could explain the origin of mass in the universe. Alongside the image, there are five pieces of text explaining what the Higgs Boson is, following a competition launched by the Science Minister, William Waldegrave, in 1993, asking academics to help describe the complex theory.

The artwork will hang in the Wolfson IT learning suite on level 1 of the Central Library for five months.

For further information and a video of the artist discussing his work click here.

Science Direct access

by Debbie

We are currently experiencing problems with access to ScienceDirect using Shibboleth (aka UK Federation). For the moment, the best option is to use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) for off-campus access. Details on the VPN can be found here.

We’ll update you when the problem is resolved.
